Michael Cera Scores Some Magical Drugs In The 'Crystal Fairy' Trailer

It seems as if Michael Cera has heard all of the complaints that he basically plays the same awkward character in every single movie. By the time this year is done nobody will be able to make that sort of claim. Those who caught him in This Is The End saw a very different side of him in a hilarious cameo, a side which first emerged in a pair of films in this year's Sundance Film Festival: Magic Magic and Crystal Fairy. The former will be hitting DVD soon, while the latter has just released its first trailer before opening this summer.

Directed by Sebastian Silva (who also directed Magic Magic), the film is basically a low-wattage stoner comedy in which Cera plays a drug-obsessed goober in Chile looking to score a hit from the San Pedro Cactus, which is said to have intense psychotropic qualities. Gaby Hoffman plays the title character, a free-spirited hippie who tags along despite Cera treating her like garbage the whole way through. There are some delightfully weird things that occur out of nowhere, and Silva makes some truly odd camera decisions, which is why I called it "loopy and random" in my review. But it all somehow works, and if anything it's worth it for the performances by Cera and Hoffman, which are about as inspired as they come.

Crystal Fairy is going to end up as a personal favorite for a lot of people, while others will wonder what the heck they just sat through. It opens on July 12th, and you can listen to my interview with Cera, Hoffman, and Silva here.
