Tops at the Box Office! 1/4/09

Nothing new came out this past week, so this will be a shortened edition. The only real surprising news here is the sheer dominance exhibited by Avatar, and really that's not all that much of a shock in my opinion.

1. Avatar- $68.3M/$352M

Avatar continues to set the record books afire, as it set the record for New Years' weekend business, not to mention the highest grossing third week ever.As if James Cameron needs more money, the foreign haul totaled another $133M, bringing Avatar's worldwide total to $1.02B in just 17 days! At this rate it will surpass The Dark Knight and challenge Cameron's own Titanic for the all-time crown.

2. Sherlock Holmes- $38.4M/$141M

Dropping a relatively average 38%, Guy Ritchie's take on the famed detective is well on it's way to solving the mystery of the $150M threshold.

3. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel- $36.6M/$157M

The well is so dry for movies this week that I might actually cave in and see this crap tomorrow. Ugh, what am I saying?

4. It's Complicated- $18.7M/$59.1M

Meryl Streep movies always have long legs...

5. The Blind Side- $12.7M/$209M

Unbelievable how well this film has done, surpassing even the vaunted Rocky films by comparision.

6. Up in the Air- $11.3M/$45M

Holding pretty consistent, Jason Reitman's frequent flyer comedy stood strong for a second week after finally going national. Glad to see such an amazing film getting the due it deserves, and not just from us critic types.

7. The Princess and the Frog- $10M/$86.1M

8. Did You Hear About the Morgans?- $5M/$25.5M

9. Nine- $4.25M/$14M

I have to admit, I'm pretty happy to see it's still hanging around even if it'll never get the numbers most were expecting.

10. Invictus- $4.13M/$30.8M
