Punch Drunk DVDs: 2/2/10

Zombieland
Think of it as the American take on Shaun of the Dead. If you liked that movie, with all it's pop culture references tossed into a hilarious zombie riff, then you're bound to dig this one. In particular, Woody Harrelson nails it as a bad ass zombie hunter with a Twinkie fetish. The writers of this film are going on to to Deadpool next, which will catapult them into superstardom, if you ask me.

Amelia
Remember all those Oscar aspirations this Hilary Swank starrer had a year ago? Those died on the vine as soon as this slow, plodding by the numbers biopic hit screens(what few screens it did land on). Swank is actually very good here as the adventurous pilot, but the script does her few favors. Richard Gere co-stars as Earhardt's waiting husband, who quickly figures out he's always gonna play second fiddle to her love of flying.

Planet Hulk
So far, the Marvel animated movies have been mind numbingly childish and sanitized. No adult should dig them at all. Especially those awful Ultimate Avengers flicks. But this one's got potential. Planet Hulk is based off the comic book storyline where the jade giant was shot off into space because he was deemed too dangerous for Earth. He lands on a wartorn planet where he becomes akin to Russell Crowe in Gladiator, only without Joaquin Phoenix overacting every scene. The comic story was brutally graphic, so I'm hoping some of that made its' way to the movie.

Love Happens
In what has to be considered a terrible year for romantic comedies, Love Happens was probably the worst. I say probably because there was a greater chance of me sprouting a tail than going to see this film. What I remember from the ads are some really fake, amateurish dialogue that nobody on earth would ever see. "You date these guys with expiration dates right on their foreheads!" Who talks like that? Maybe it's just the guy in me, but I wanted this film to crash and burn, and it did.

Ong-Bak 2
If there's anything to take away from the sequel/prequel to Tony Jaa's amazing Ong-Bak, it's that the man is a force of nature on the screen. There are few who can compare with his amazing speed and acrobatic fight sequences, almost Jackie Chan-esque in his ability to use the environment as a weapon. As a filmmaker, however, I still have reservations. Despite it's problems, if you're a fan of Jaa(and who isn't?), this is one you must have in your collection.

Adam
One of the best indie films I saw last year, Hugh Dancy stars as a young man with Asperger's Syndrome, a disease similar to autism in many respects. He strikes up a relationship with his well-to-do, adventurous neighbor(played by the gorgeous Rose Byrne), which causes some major rifts with her family. A sweet, often hilarious romantic comedy that I think most people will love if they give it a chance.

More Than a Game
This is the documentary supposedly about the high school team NBA star Lebron James played in, that broke all sorts of Ohio basketball records. But really, it's a film about Lebron. Don't be fooled. We need to see how humble his beginnings were so we can fully understand why he's so arrogant and selfish now.

Universal Soldier: Regeneration
Who commissioned the return of this franchise? Certainly not me, but contrary to expectations I've only heard positive things about the revival of the Universal Soldier. Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren seem to be experiencing something of a rebirth lately. This one's moving to the top of my Netflix queue.

New York, I Love You
It seems like only yesterday that I was agonizing over whether or not to go to the theater to see this film, which is a collection of various love stories all centered around the famed city of lights. A sequel of sorts to 2006's Paris Je'taime, this one stars a who's who of stars including Natalie Portman, Bradley Cooper, Christina Ricci, Orlando Bloom, Shia Labeouf, and others.

The House of the Devil
I'm sick to death of being told that I need to see this film. I'm not the horror expert in this motley crew of ours! The fact remains that The House of the Devil surprised me and many others by showing up on a ton of different Top 10 lists for 2009. The story is intriguing, involving a college student who takes a babysitting job at a creepy looking household even after she hears that the couple don't actually have kids. I'm assuming some pretty evil stuff goes on thereafter, and I'll admit I'm pretty psyched to find out what that is.
