Universal Preps Kurt Cobain Biopic

It was back in 2005 that Gus Van Sant echoed the final days in the life of Nirvana frontman, Kurt Cobain, who committed suicide back in 1994. That film, titled Last Days, depicted the rocker as an aimless emotional wanderer. While the main character was not named Kurt Cobain, it was clear Van Sant's desire to tell the star's story in some way.

Universal has been developing a true biopic on Cobain's life since 2007, when screenwriter David Benioff(Brothers) took on the scripting chores. According to THR, Oren Moverman, who just recently gained two Oscar noms for his directorial debut, The Messenger, has been brought on to rework the script and possibly direct the film.

No word yet on casting. The bulk of the story will be based on "Heavier Than Heaven: A Biography of Kurt Cobain", the 2001 book written by Charles Cross. Cobain's widow, Courtney Love, is on board as exec producer. Universal Studios owns the life rights to both Cobain and Love.
