Punch Drunk DVDs!

The Book of Eli
Only Denzel Washington can make a blind man wearing dirty rags seem cooler than everybody else. In the Hughes Brothers' post-apocalyptic western, Denzel plays a mysterious journeyman on a mission to an unknown place. All he has are his handcrafted weapons, his sunglasses, and a book everybody seems willing to die for. A simple story we've seen before with a surprising twist and some smart action.

When in Rome
Just look at that DVD cover. Doesn't it suck? That was the final poster for the movie. The first one was even worse, featuring a pee yellow background and that idiotic snap of Kristen Bell biting her fingernails.  Is that her way of being cute and sexy? And what's with Mr. Fergie leering at her like he just spiked her drink? I could care less about the contrived film itself. You couldn't pay me enough to watch this thing.

Unthinkable
We all love Samuel L. Jackson, but that bamma has more movies goin' straight to DVD than the entire cast of Dorm Daze combined. In this one, he stars with Carrie-Anne Moss and Michael Sheen in a political thriller about an FBI agent who is willing to sink to any depths to find out the location of three bombs planted across the country. Sounds like it's right up my alley.

Showgirls
How many different versions of Paul Verhoeven's sleazy wank off flick are they gonna crap out? People must be buying them, though. I can see why. Few movies are as skanky and unforgettably awful as this. I feel dirty just thinking about all the times I've watched it. Oops.

Youth in Revolt
For awhile this was the funniest movie of the year, but it's still one of the best and instantly added to my DVD collection. Michael Cera pokes a little fun at his career of playing sensitive, awkward dudes by pulling a complete 180. He stars as Nick Twisp, the usual Cera character, who in a bid to impress the hot chick in town(Portia Doubleday), lets his bad boy alter ego take over.
