Tops at the Box Office

1. The Karate Kid- $56M

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the week isn't that The Karate Kid is #1, but by how much it beat fellow 80s remake, The A-Team. Opening at over 5,300 screens, Sony Pictures reports that only 45% of the audience were parents and families, meaning that there might still be an untapped audience that will be making their way to see it in the coming weeks. While I don't expect it to remain at #1 again, especially in the face of another family film like Toy Story 3, The Karate Kid will be hanging around near the top of the charts for a couple more weeks.

2. The A-Team- $26M

Kindof a disappointing start for the second of two remakes this week, but it's to be expected. The A-Team has a very limited fanbase range, consisting mostly of dudes over the age of 30 who remember the TV show. With few really huge stars to market(the biggest being Liam Neeson), The A-Team was looking at an uphill climb. At least it fared better than The Losers did, which opened with a disastrous $9M.

3. Shrek Forever After- $15.8M/$210M

After three weeks at the top, Shrek finally drops down a couple of spots  but still manages a pretty hefty total. Expect that to go away quickly with Toy Story 3 looming on the horizon.

4. Get Him to the Greek- $10.1M/$36.5M

Only a 40% drop this week for the Forgetting Sarah Marshall spinoff, but considering its mediocre debut much more can't be expected.

5. Killers- $8.17M/$30.7M

Now that I've actually seen Killers I can honestly say that it's made about $30M more than it deserved. This thing had a $70M budget? Spent on what? Ashton Kutcher's ab wax and combs for Tom Selleck's mustache?

6. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time- $6.58M/$72.3M

7. Marmaduke- $6M/$22.3M

8. Sex and the City 2- $5.53M/$84.7M

9. Iron Man 2- $4.55M/$299M

10. Splice- $2.86M/$13.1M

You suck, America. I know it's sci-fi and it came out at the worst possible time of year but there's no way Splice should be getting beat out by Marmaduke. Or Killers.
