Predators sequel in the works; Rodriguez to Produce

Yesterday at San Diego Comic-Con, Robert Rodriguez confirmed that a sequel to Predators was already in the works. Rodriguez won't be directing, unfortunately, but will be staying on as producer.  Predators, which just bowed a couple of weeks ago, had one of the largest second week drops in attendance in recent memory at 72%, but it still has managed to gross over $40M, working on a paltry $38M budget. More importantly, Predators proved to be a hit with fans of the genre and the series as a whole. Here's what Rodriguez had to say in an interview with IGN...

Rodriguez: "[The studio] said, 'Let's do some other ones. What other story ideas do you have?'"  "Because it was like, let's test out the market with this one. They really wanted it to be pretty contained, pretty scaled-back. They didn't want to put too many of the ideas into it that we could save for a second one. So we could see what the appetite was, because the bigger movie would actually be what comes following that. That kind of sets up a new storyline, new location and world, and then you can really go crazy from there."

The "bigger movie"? So is this just the beginning of a trilogy? I'm not so sure how I feel about that. I don't really want the basic idea to get out of control. For instance, I'm not sure I want to see a Predator invasion of Earth or anything like that. We shall see, but for now it looks like we can expect more from the alien hunters sooner rather than later.

Another interesting thing he left out was Predators director Nimrod Antal. It might've just been an oversight, or could they be looking at someone else to take over?
