Rumor Mill: Mara as Lisbeth Salander in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?

Consider this one grist for the rumor mill, but The Playlist took a tip from one of it's readers that Rooney Mara(Youth in Revolt) was the lead contender to play Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's remake of . Mara apparently has a scene stealing performance in Fincher's upcoming Facebook origin film, The Social Network, and it may have been enough to win her the coveted role. The Playlist checked it out, and it might actually be true.

She joins an increasingly large list of contenders, including Carey Mulligan, Kristen Stewart, and Ellen Page. Daniel Craig is still said to be in serious talks for the other starring role of Mikael Blomkvist.

I don't recognize Mara from Youth in Revolt, so either the role was small or she wasn't that impressive. Frankly I don't remember much of anything from A Nightmare on Elm Street, another film she starred in, and since everybody looked the same I wouldn't know her anyway. Personally I want somebody more recognizable and proven for the part. Lisbeth is such an intriguing character, both in personality and in appearance. I want to see someone I know make that transformation.
