The Sunday Drive: 7/11/10

3. Despicable Me
Who wants to see another movie with those boring ol' superheroes? The villains always steal the show anyway, right? Steve Carell voices  Gru, a mediocre supervillain with a plan way out of his league: To steal the moon. If it's going to work, he's going to have to find a way to do it while playing daddy to three adorable orphans.

2. Winter's Bone

A harrowing mystery set in the heart of the Ozarks, a mountainous terrain so isolated and foreign that it might as well be Jupiter. Jennifer Lawrence gives what I think is the performance of the year as Ree Dolly, a tough girl on the verge of womanhood, struggling to keep her family together after her father puts their house up for bond and skips town.

1. Predators
The best cure for the Alien vs. Predator blues is Robert Rodriguez and Nimrod Antal's long awaited sequel, starring Adrien Brody as an ex-mercenary who wakes up to discover he's become the prey on an alien game preserve. It's the Predaor follow-up fans have been waiting 20 years for. No offense to Danny Glover.

DVD Pick of the Week: A Single Man
Colin Firth buttons up his suave, ladies' man persona to play the straight laced George, a gay high school teacher who just lost the love of his life(Matthew Goode) to a car accident. Faced with the prospect of a life alone, George struggles through his daily routine without ever being able to show his true feelings to the world. Renowned fashion designer Tom Ford makes his directorial debut, bringing a glamorous and glossy sheen to the 1960s. It's Firth who stands out, in an Oscar nominated performance that has the actor reaching new depths we've never seen from him before.
