The Gravity saga continues; Portman offered lead role

Could this be the final, last ditch effort to salvage Alfonso Cuaron's(CAngelina Jolie hildren of Men) massive space epic, Gravity? What started out as a project with attached to the lead role fluttered as she dropped out. Then the studio basically sought out every actress with a filmography to take her place, with Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively the lead contenders. None of the actresses had the gravitas necessary to basically be the only face on screen for the bulk of this gigantic picture, so the studio reached out for Jolie again, who promptly slapped their hands away again.

Without a big name star, it's likely the film never gets off the ground, even with Robert Downey Jr. already locked to co-star. Perhaps making one last grab, Natalie Portman has now been offered the role Jolie left behind. This comes after the buzz being generated around her performance in Darren Aronofsky's Black Swan. She's been sent the script and will be making a decision shortly.

Portman and Jolie are two totally different actresses who bring different things to the table. I don't see Portman as having the ferocity of Jolie on-screen. Without having read the script myself I can't say whether or not it would need to be altered in any way to accomodate her.

If Portman accepts, we might see the film in 2012 after Downey finishes production on Sherlock Holmes 2.
