James Cameron's not done with Battle Angel just yet

James Cameron's dance card is pretty full up with the next couple Avatar sequels, but that doesn't mean all the other projects he was attached to just vanished into thin air. The one I was most interested in, an adaption of the manga/anime Battle Angel Alita, would either have to be set aside or passed on to somebody who can in some way live up to Cameron's vision. Talking to Collider, Cameron actually discussed that very idea....

Cameron: "I’m obviously going to be pretty busy for the next five years and so I had to consider, do I hand this project off to another director? And then I thought, ‘No, I love it too much.’”

It’s such a rich world. What I’m going to do is take the spine story and use elements from the first four books. So, the Motorball from books three and four, and parts of the story of one and two will all be in the movie."

Battle Angel is based on Yukito Kishiro's 1990 manga about a female cyborg discovered by an engineer in a trash heap. With absolutely no memories other than her knowledge of a rare martial art, she is rebuilt and becomes a bounty hunter while trying to discover keys to her past.

I'm happy Cameron is staying aboard, and the delay will give him a chance to perfect the 3D/CGI technology that will no doubt be a key component in the production.
