Ryan Gosling takes off with Logan's Run remake; Nicolas Winding Refn to direct

I haven't paid too much attention to any of the news regarding the remake of Logan's Run. The chief reason is that I never really thought it'd get off the ground, and even if it did I was less than enthused by all the names attached to it. The last thing I wrote was way back in May of last year when it looked like Carl Erik Rinsch(formerly of the Alien prequel) would be directing. That plan ltanked, and there's been little concrete news lately.  Now the film has not only scored a major trade up on the directing front, but a surprise choice to star has catapulted it near the top of my anticipated list.

Deadline reports that Nicolas Winding Refn(Valhalla Rising, Bronson) has been tapped to direct the remake, with Ryan Gosling set to star. This would be Gosling's first full blown tentpole flick, unless he starred in a sequel to The Believer nobody told me about?

The script by Alex Garland maintains the basic premise of the original novel. Gosling will take over the role made iconic by Michael York in the 1976 film. He'll star as Logan  a member of a security force known as the Sandmen who are tasked with tracking down and killing those who attempt to escape his society's mandated death at age 30. Eventually he is forced to go on the run himself.

Anyone who's seen Winding Refn's Bronson, or better yet the viking flick Valhalla Rising, knows that one thing he doesn't do is "conventional". That might not mesh with what is clearly a mainstream studio production, but we'll just have to wait and see.
