Bradley Cooper wants in on Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby

Y'know, if Baz Luhrmann would stop "researching" and get off his duff casting The Great Gatsby, we wouldn't have situations like this, with actors coming out of the woodwork lobbing public hail marys for parts. Bradley Cooper has expressed to The New York Times his desire to join Luhrmann's adaptation as the most hated(or the most complex) character in the story, Tom Buchanan.  The actor(with his unidentifable shade of blue eyes) says...

Cooper: “To me, he’s the best character in the book. He’s so complicated,” Cooper said. “He’s xenophobic, he’s an alcoholic, but he also understands some profound stuff about class. Whoever plays it has to take a gentle hand, because it could so easily be stock, where he’s a rich jerk you don’t identify with at all.”

Cooper actually hits on one of my very few quibbles with the 1974 film, in that I couldn't buy Bruce Dern in the Tom Buchanan role. I thought it called for somebody who was on equal footing with Redford's Gatsby in terms of look and appeal. Dern, while a great actor, doesn't quite fit that bill. I can see Cooper and Dicaprio goin' at it, though.

Cooper notes that he hasn't spoken to Luhrmann about it, and doesn't even know if he's being considered. Even if Luhrmann was, he wouldn't tell anybody.  Right now all we know for certain is that the film has been greenlit and will be shot in Australia in 3D(????). Carey Mulligan has been confirmed for the Daisy Buchanan role, while Dicaprio and Tobey Maguire have been workshopping the roles of Gatsby and Nick Carraway. So far there've been no rumors about who'll play my favorite character, Daisy's best friend Jordan Baker. Amanda Seyfried? Maybe?

Y'know what? Cooper might be a perfect fit.  Somebody get Luhrmann's people on the horn!
