Ghost Rider sequel brings new origin, new nemesis

I don't think anyone would care a lick if the directing duo of Neveldine/Taylor(Crank) and screenwriter David Goyer totally ignored 2007's Ghost Rider. Other than a hammy performance by Nic Cage, there's not that much memorable about it(other than Eva Mendes). However they all decided to make the sequel, Spirit of Vengeance, a continuation with very loose ties to the original. That doesn't mean the Ghost Rider's back story couldn't use a little tweaking. In a conversation with Movieline, Brian Taylor confirmed that they've made some changes to his origin....

Taylor: We basically completely re-envisioned the whole start of the character, and actually had to re-engineer the origin of the Ghost Rider. The whole mythology behind the Ghost Rider that existed in the comic books never really made sense to me, so we sort of had to re-engineer the entire back-story of the Ghost Rider into something new.

As for bad guys, we already know that Ciaran Hinds is locked in as the Devil, but he's not exactly the hands on type of villain.  Johnny Whitworth(Empire Records) just confirmed with AMC that he'll be playing Blackout, one of Ghost Rider's primary enemies. In the film he starts of as a common criminal, but the Devil later grants him supernatural powers.  In the comics, he is a human/demon hybrid with superhuman strength, speed, and the ability to extinguish any form of light.

Ghost Rider: Spirt of Vengeance is set to scorch theaters on February 17th, 2012!
