Just last week we got a list of candidates to head up Tony Gilroy's Jason Bourne spinoff, The Bourne Legacy
. Dominic Cooper, Garrett Hedlund, and Joel Edgerton(
Animal Kingdom
) were said to be testing for it, with a few established names possibly in the mix. One name that wasn't on either of those lists has apparently risen to the top of Universal's want list, and that's Jeremy Renner.
Latino Review reports that Universal has sent an offer out to Renner for the lead gig, although they also note that Gilroy was personally pushing for Oscar Isaac(
Sucker Punch
). But would Renner even have the time to join another potential multi-film franchise? He's already got
Mission Impossible-Ghost Protocol coming up, with his character possibly taking that one over. And let's not forget he's also Hawkeye in
The Avengers, a role which could spinoff in any number of ways. He'll certainly be in multiple movies for Marvel, so where will he find the time? Even if he can work it into his schedule, he might not want to burn himself out.
I'm not going to complain about seeing Renner in anything. As I type this I've got his 2005 film,
12 and Holding
, playing in the background. The guy has been a powerful supporting actor long before
The Hurt Locker
, and thankfully more people had a chance to see that last year in The Town. In terms of Bourne, I still don't want to judge how good he'd be in it because we don't know anything about the story just yet, but I have a hard time believing Renner wouldn't be great.
