Whether any of us like it or not, all these young adult adaptations aren't going away any time soon. The last couple that we've seen,
I Am Number Four
and
Beastly
, have been pretty heinous. But I'm holding out a modicum of hope for
The Seventh Son, based on the first book in Joseph Delaney's The Last Apprentice
series. With
Julianne Moore already locked in as the blood sucking witch, Mother Malkin, and Jeff Bridges in talks for another major role, the only thing needed was a pair of fresh faces for the film's two biggest roles.
Variety reports that Sam Claflin(
Any Human Heart
) and rising star Alicia Vikander have won the roles of Tom Ward and Alice Deane. Alex Pettyfer and Jennifer Lawrence had been rumored as the frontrunners for awhile, but Lawrence just recently signed on to The Hunger Games, and Pettyfer..well, sucks.
Claflin got hist start as part of the TV series,
Pillars of the Earth
, and will be seen next as Philip Swift in the upcoming
Pirates of the Caribbean. Vikander had been up for the lead in
Snow White and the Huntsman, but lost out to Kristen Stewart. She's been knockin' 'em dead at festivals with her award winning performance in
Pure.
So why am I cautiously optimistic about this film out of all the others? First of all, because Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore add instant acting credibility. I know already that it won't be a complete disaster. And also because of the director, Sergei Bodrov. I'll be curious to see how he follows up the masterful work he did on
Mongol
.
The Seventh Son tells the story of a seventh son of a seventh son, gifted with the ability to sense the dark things others can't. He begins training to become a "Spook", in order to help combat evil.
