Tops at the Box Office: Hop bounds into 1st Place

1. Hop- $38.1M
Universal has to be pleased with what their animation department has been putting together lately. Despicable Me surprised everybody last year with a whopping $56M opening and a $544M result. Now the folks who brought us that film are basking in even more unexpected success as their CGI/live-action Easter bunny adventure leaped well beyond analyst expectations. It's most obvious competition was from the only other family film on the block, Diary of a Wimpy Kid 2, but Hop pounced all over that one.
2. Source Code- $15.1M
Not exactly a barnburner for Duncan Jones' first mainstream effort, a sci-fi film wisely marketed as a thriller of the Unstoppable sort. So it's unfair to compare Source Code's debut to that of Moon. The real angle to look at is Jake Gyllenhaal. This ranks as the fourth best opening of his career, with the biggest being the much wider released The Day After Tomorrow($68M).  He's the big draw for most folks, so I think this establishes him as a credible if unspectacular box office draw.

3. Insidious- $13.5M
Kept at a measly budget of around $1M, Insidious broke the bank big time by capitalizing on the powerful franchise tags of Saw and Paranormal Activity, the makers of which helped put this poltergeist flick together.
4. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules- $10.2M/$38.4M
Last week's champeen fizzled in the face of Hop, down 58% from last week. But hey, the movie has made more than it's budget back pretty much assures us another film next year. So all is well.
5. Limitless- $9.4M/$55.6M
6. The Lincoln Lawyer- $7.05M/$39.6M
Continues to hold strong even if the grosses aren't that high. It again had the lowest audience drop from last week.
7. Sucker Punch- $6.08M/$29.9M
Zack Snyder's first original work just hasn't connected with folks. Women don't dig it, thanks to a pretty sexist marketing campaign. And dudes don't want to look at it as anything more than that. I'm still pretty certain Sucker Punch will kick butt overseas, but certainly the domestic showing is going to give some studios pause.
8. Rango- $4.56M/$114M
9. Paul- $4.33M/$31.9M
10. Battle: Los Angeles- $3.5M/$78.5M
