Plot details and voice cast finally revealed for Pixar's Reboot Ralph

It just kinda sat there on the Pixar production schedule like a dark unknown blob. Reboot Ralph. Set for May 2013. We knew at least something about every other film surrounding it. Then it basically switched places with Monsters Univeristy, moving up to November 2nd 2012. But we still didn't know much beyond a very limited premise. Now we do, and as it stands right now it sounds pretty damned cool.

First of all, the film is no longer called Reboot Ralph at all. It's now Wreck-It Ralph, which sounds like one of those dangerous, swallowable piece toys from the 1970s. Initially described as being out a video game character who sees technology pass him by, the story has been expanded greatly. Wreck-It Ralph is the bad guy in a popular video game who wants desperately to be loved as a good guy. To be looked upon as a hero(dude has a Mario Complex), he invades a first person shooter to win a medal but unleashes havoc that threatens the entire arcade. Rich Moore(Drawn Together, Futurama) directs, and seems to have designs on portrayng Ralph in an old school, 8-bit way. Sounds like a lot of fun, and I'm imagining Pixar's beautiful animation being used to create pixelated 8-bit characters and worlds. Knowing Pixar they'll have some clever ways to poke fun at all the crappy issues that were so prevalent with those games, like "pop up" and poor collision detection.

All this comes courtesy of a Disney press release, which also announces the first wave of voice talent. John C. Reilly voices Ralph; Sarah Silverman is Vanellope von Schweetz, a "glitch" character aiding in Ralph's quest; Jane Lynch Sergeant Calhoun, the flick's villain; and Jack McBrayer(30 Rock) is Fix-It Felix, the hero Ralph aspires to be like.

Pixar already worked wonders with superheroes through The Incredibles, and now I'm dying to see what they can do with another one of my great passions in video games. Here's hoping we get some promo art sooner rather than later.
