Oscar Isaac to play an assassin in The Bourne Legacy

Remember back when The Bourne Identity came out back in 2002? Other than it being a breakout hit for Matt Damon, proving he could be a viable box office draw with mainstream appeal, the supporting roles were filled by some remarkable talent as well. Clive Owen, who up to that point had been a solid but relatively unknown actor, used his minor performance as a hitman in the film as a springboard to bigger things. History may be about to repeat itself, as  Deadline reports fast rising star Oscar Isaac has joined The Bourne Legacy as a brainwashed assassin.

Isaac had been one of the dozen or so contenders for the lead gig, and reportedly one of writer/director Tony Gilroy's top choices. That job obviously went to Jeremy Renner, taking on a character who isn't Jason Bourne but exists in that same world of shadowy government organizations. In addition to Renner, Isaac will be joining Rachel Weisz and a villainous turn by Ed Norton.

It's been a huge year for Isaac, and he's had a chance to work with some of the industry's finest. He appeared in Steven Soderbergh's Che biopic; Ridley Scott's Robin Hood; as well as Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch. He'll be seen next opposite Ryan Gosling in Drive, directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. And let's not forget he'll be a part of Madonna's directorial effort, W.E.  Busy guy, and that's only a fraction of his recent credits.

The Bourne Legacy is set to drop in August 2012
