Sure Shots: The Paperboy; Godzilla; Diablo Cody rewriting Evil Dead remake

* The last week has seen a lot of movement on Lee Daniels' adaptation of The Paperboy. Just yesterday we learned that John Cusack would be replacing Tobey Maguire in the crime flick, and now today a surprise bit of casting as R & B singer Maxwell has signed on. His role is unclear, but I'm betting Daniels is hoping he'll have the same effect that Lenny Kravitz had on Precious. He joins Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey, and possibly Nicole Kidman. * Been kinda quiet on the Godzilla front, hasn't it? It was way back in January when we learned Legendary Pictures had tapped Gareth Edwards(Monsters) to direct the film. Edwards is a solid choice, but not exactly a known commodity to a lot of folks. So what does the studio do? They hire a guy with proven fanboy cred that has a long history of churning out franchise successes. David Goyer, who is currently working on Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, will be writing the script. The only thing he has to do to get a thumbs up from me is making a better movie than that awful Godzilla film with Matthew Broderick in it. Ugh.

* Yesterday came the news that a lot of Evil Dead nerds had been hoping for: the remake is officially on, although I doubt anybody figured the director would be the unknown Fede Alvarez. Alvarez is a close associate of Sam Raimi, and has a deal in place with Raimi's Ghost House Productions. The surprises don't stop there, as it was learned today that Alvarez also co-wrote the script with Rodo Sayagues. Raimi and Ash himself, Bruce Campbell, are producing, and now it's been confirmed via press release(and Twitter of course) that Diablo Cody(Juno, Jennifer's Body) is doing "revisions" on the script. I don't have the love for Evil Dead that a lot of others do, but her style of writing should be a perfect fit for the horror comedy.
