Robert Schwentke to direct Nazi thriller, The Poison Kitchen

After behing behind the camera for Jodie Foster's uninspiring airline thriller, Flightplan, if you had said a few years later Robert Schwentke would be one of my favorite directors then I would've laughed in your face. But I dug his take on The Time Traveler's Wife, and had a lot of fun with his old folks action flick, Red. Next year he'll direct Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges in the comic book adaptation, R.I.P.D. Now it's looking like 2012 is going to be a busy year for him, as Variety reports he'll be directing The Poison Kitchen, a story set in the early days of the Nazi Party.

Matthew Sand(Ninja Assassin) wrote the script, which tells the story of the Munchener Post, an anti-Nazi newspaper which railed against Adolf Hitler long before he rose to power. The paper was the first to make public mention of Hitler's "Final Solution", and earned the nick name of the "poison kitchen" for all the trouble they caused. In 1933 after he gained power, Hitler had the paper shut down and it's printing presses destroyed.

Sounds like an awesome story, and one deserving of being told. The only thing that scares me is that Martin Moszkowicz, the head of Constantin's film division, envisions this as an action thriller moreso than a political one. So it doesn't look like we're going to get anything too deep here. Aw shucks.
