My age is showing. It's been sixteen years since Denzel Washington and Don Cheadle last paired up, in the sultry 1940s noir, Devil in a Blue Dress. Great film, in my opinion, and one I wish more people would take the time to experience. It should have led to more films starring the two actors together, because I think their acting styles mesh quite well. Both are charismatic leading men, who attack every role intelligently. So we had to wait awhile to see it happen again, in the latest film from director Robert Zemeckis.
Cheadle, along with character actor Bruce Greenwood(Dinner for Schmucks) have joined the cast of Flight, Zemeckis's first live-action film in over a decade. Greenwood has worked with Washington recently, in 2006's lousy thriller, Deja Vu. Their roles in Flight are unclear at this point, joining actress Kelly Reilly in the story about an airplane captain deemed a hero after saving his passengers from a mid air disaster. That is until it becomes clear his alcoholism may have been the cause of the incident to begin with.
Flight is shaping up to be a film to watch, and with Cheadle pushing him I suspect Washington will give us the type of layered performance we haven't seen from him in years. [Moviehole]
