The Sunday Drive: 9/25/11
3. Restless
Although I have my problems with some of the morbid aspects of Gus Van Sant's tale of young romance, he does find something honest and pure in the chemistry between Mia Wasikowska and newcomer Henry Hopper. The story centers on the budding love between a free spirited young woman with terminal cancer, and a death obsessed guy struggling with a personal tragedy.
2. Moneyball
On base percentage, Earned Run Average....don't let the geeky insider baseball stuff deter you. Moneyball is an underdog story of a different sort, not about a guy looking for personal vindication, but to change an entire sport. Brad Pitt gives a natural, powerful performance as Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane, who uses a controversial new system to build an inexpensive, championship squad.
1. Drive
I've heard the complaints. "Drive is too slow. There's not enough violence. The ads are misleading." They're all horse crap. Put on your thinking cap and get engaged with a higher class of action flick, free of mindless bloodshed and vacant characters. Drive is a pulse pounding film noir backed by a rousing score, slick direction by Nicholas Winding Refn, and a smoldering performance by Ryan Gosling.
DVD Pick of the Week: Bridesmaids
Even if this wasn't such a soft week for DVDs, Bridesmaids would likely end up at the top of my list no matter what the competition. Even I wouldn't go so far to say it's the best movie of 2011, it's certainly the funniest and the one I've been craving to watch again and again. Hell, I saw it three times in theaters and it was better each time. Kristen Wiig leads a talented pack of funny ladies dealing with the various anxieties of an impending wedding. Don't let that one-line synopsis fool you. This is no Bride Wars. Bridesmaids actually celebrates the friendships between these women rather than destroys it, but does so with enough raunchy humor that guys won't curl up into the fetal position.
