Julie Delpy to direct Joe Strummer biopic; 3rd Before Sunrise film in the works
My first time seeing French actress Julie Delpy on screen was in Three Colors: White, and I was immediately taken by her breathtaking beauty and presence. That led me to run out and find some of her other stuff, like her first film, Detective, which was directed by the man who discovered her, Jean-Luc Godard. Since then she's flirted with stardom, but has been content to remain mostly under the radar, making her big splash on our shores with 1995's Before Sunrise. It was in that film and the follow-up, Before Sunset, that I think has cemented her as a favorite to many, identifying her through the witty, flirty conversations she would have with co-star and co-writer Ethan Hawke.
It was nine years between Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, and in that time Hawke, Delpy, and writer/director Richard Linklater have probably fielded hundreds of questions about a possible third film in the series. While speaking to Allocine in a really cool interview, Hawke revealed that early discussions are underway with Delpy and Linklater about another film so that Jesse and Celine can continue their lengthy chat...
Hawke: "Well, I don't know what we're going to do but I know the three of us have been talking a lot in the last six months. All of three of us have been having similar feelings that we're ready to revisit those characters. There's nine years between the first two movies and, if we made the film next summer, it would be nine years again so we're really started thinking that would be a good thing to do. We're going to try write it this year."
The Before Sunrise flicks don't cost anything, and probably are a breeze to shoot, so I wouldn't be surprised if we see this get done in such a short amount of time.
If so, they might want to hurry as Delpy has just lined up her fifth directorial effort, a biopic on The Clash frontman, Joe Strummer. Titled The Right Profile after a song on The Clash's 1979 album, London Calling, the film will focus on Strummer's planned disappearance from the public spotlight in 1982, which would have been just before their album, Combat Rock, was released. Strummer would die suddenly of a heart ailment in 2002.
Delpy tends to cast herself in her own movies, so don't be surprised if she does so here, as well. She did the same with 2007's 2 Days in Paris, the light romantic comedy featuring her opposite Adam Goldberg. I can't stand that guy in anything. She just finished wrapping up filming of the sequel, 2 Days in New York, which has her character now involved with another guy, played by Chris Rock. Seriously.
