Neil Jordan adds Sam Riley to cast of vampire flick, Byzantium
It might be hard to remember, but before Twilight vampires were creatures to be feared. They lived by hiding in plain sight, often using their achieved status as a means of hiding the blood they must spill in order to survive. On the big screen, nobody presented their clandestine nature better than Neil Jordan in 1994's Interview with the Vampire. Nearly two decades later, Jordan is back exploring the world of bloodsuckers with Byzantium.
Already featuring Saoirse Ronan(Atonement) and Gemma Arterton(Tamara Drewe) as the two leads, the film has been delayed a little bit due to some funding issues. It's now back on track thanks to a cash infusion with production kicking off next month, and a new addition to the cast in Sam Riley(Brighton Rock). I haven't seen Riley since he played Ian Curtis in the fantastic biopic, Control, but that says more about his film choices than anything else. Hopefully things will turn out better with his starring role in Walter Salles' adaptation of On the Road, which also features Garrett Hedlund, Viggo Mortensen and Kristen Stewart.
Byzantium features a script by Moira Buffini(Jane Eyre), and tells the story of a mother and daughter pair of vampires who hunt as a team. Caleb Landry(X-men: First Class), Bradley Jones, and Daniel Mays co-star. [THR]
