Steven Soderbergh to direct The Bitter Pill, from Contagion writer Scott Z. Burns
We're running out of opportunities to see Steven Soderbergh at work. Or so it seems. His "retirement" is still on the horizon, with only Magic Mike, Haywire, and his Liberace biopic Behind the Candelabra left. There was to be one more, as he had been set to direct The Man from U.N.C.L.E. based on a script by his frequent collaborator, Scott Z. Burns(Contagion). Soderbergh eventually dropped out due to various beefs he had with Warner Brothers, leaving a gaping hole in his schedule.
ThePlaylist reports that Soderbergh isn't wasting any time in finding something to take U.N.C.L.E.'s place, as he'll direct The Bitter Pill, a film which as of just a couple months ago Burns was planning to direct based on his own script. We first heard about Burns' plans for it back in September when the movie was called The Side Effects. It's described as a psychological thriller, tied into people's use of pharmaceuticals to get by.
Production and casting were set to kick off in the next few days, but with Soderbergh jumping aboard there'll probably be some delays. I'll be curious to see who they get to star in it, as there'll be no shortage of folks trying to get in on one of Soderbergh's last films. Maybe there will be room for George Clooney? Or Brad Pitt?
