Noooo!! Starship Troopers remake in the works
* Silent scream* Admittedly, when I first saw Starship Troopers back in 1997 I totally misjudged it, taking it for just a silly alien invasion flick with average special effects and questionable performances by some talented folks(Denise Richards, Neil Patrick Harris, Casper Van Dien). Over the years it's become a favorite, and I recognize it for the slyly intelligent film that it is, taking a fierce jab at the media's love affair with the military, and out government's willingness to exploit it for their own propaganda purposes. Paul Verhoeven directed it, and was smart enough to avoid the terrible sequels that followed.
Unfortunately, producer Neal Moritz is keen on remaking the sci-fi film, and has secured X-men: First Class writers Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz to pen the screenplay. The story, which is based on the novel by Robert Heinlein, follows soldier Johnny Rico through his time as a member of the Mobile Infantry, fighting against the interstellar threat of insect creatures known as "The Bugs".
For whatever reason, Verhoeven's films have been getting remade left and right lately, with Total Recall and Robocop already in production. Basic Instinct won't be far away, just you wait and see. [Vulture]
