Trailer Time: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, directed by Peter Jackson
When that whole thing with Guillermo Del Toro went down and he was replaced by Peter Jackson as director of The Hobbit, I was less than thrilled. Not that I think Peter Jackson isn't a good filmmaker, as proven by the sheer awesomeness of The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The reason is that I wanted to see what The Hobbit would look like under somebody else's guidance, fearing that the two prequel films we would get would look and feel exactly the same as before. Well, now that the trailer for The Hobbit is here, my fears were confirmed.
That's not to say this won't be a great movie, but it's already so damn familiar that it's hard to get worked up. The Shire looks exactly as you remember it, only instead of Elijah Wood as Frodo Baggins, this story follows his adopted parent, Bilbo(Martin Freeman, previously played by Ian Holm), as he journeys with a dozen dwarves to reclaim their lost treasure from the dragon, Smaug. The first half of the trailer is an introduction to Bilbo's companions, in particular the gruff and stoic Thorin Oakenshield(Richard Armitage). The "one ring" makes it's first appearance, with Gollum(Andy Serkis) not far behind, and even a glimpse at some of the characters who don't actually appear in the J.R.R. Tolkien novel, such as the returning Cate Blanchett as the elf, Galadriel.
Not bad, in fact once the action gets going in the later half of the trailer it looks pretty amazing. I'll get more hyped over this in the coming months for sure. Check out the trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey below....
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is still a long ways off(plenty of time to write out Legolas? Yes?), opening on December 14th 2012. The final chapter hits a year later on December 13th.
