Disney picks two unknowns to direct 'Maleficent' and 'Matterhorn'

Good for Disney. I always appreciate seeing new blood given a chance to take on major projects, and the Mouse House apparently agrees. They did it to some success hiring Joseph Kosinski to helm Tron: Legacy, and now they're doing it again with Maleficent and that Matterhorn theme park ride adaptation.

The bigger of the two projects by far is Maleficent, a modern, darker version of Sleeping Beauty. Angelina Jolie has long been attached to the title role, presenting the story from the evil mistress's point of view. Disney had been looking at bigger names, such as David O. Russell and Tim Burton, to take on the directing gig but have instead settled on the unknown Robert Stromberg. This would mark his debut, but he's had plenty of experience working on Alice in Wonderland, Shutter Island, and Avatar.  His visual effects experience should come in handy, especially if we get to see Maleficent take on her dragon form at some point.

And then there's Matterhorn, which now has commercials director Brian Beletic. I've never seen his work so I can't really gauge him, but Disney must see something to entrust him with a project like this. Disney's movies based on their theme park rides have proven to be big hits so far(Pirates of the Caribbean, anyone?), and they've already got others on the way. Officially known as "The Untitled Explorers Project", Matterhorn will follow five super adventurers brought in to the Pennine Alps under different guises and use extreme skiing and mountaineering to trek across the untouched realm.
