Somebody in the Arab royal family really hates Tobe Hooper's 'Djinn'
Uh oh. It looks like Tobe Hooper(The Texas Chainsaw Massacre) has done a literal job of royally pissing somebody off with his latest horror, Djinn. We first noted the film in March of last year, and filming was reportedly completed not long after, with the premier expected to take place at the Dubai International Film Festival. Filmed in the United Arab Emirates, the story would follow an Emirati couple who returns home from the United States only to discover that their new apartment was haunted by a malevolent spirit. The spirit would allegedly tie into the djinn, who are similar to the genies we are more familiar with.
Over the last few months there's been very little information on a release for the film, and it's starting to become clear why. Movie Sushi notes that someone within the UAE royal family got a sneak peek at the film, and is said to be upset at the portrayal of Arabian culture, and considers it to be politically subversive. Mohammed Al Mubarak, the head of studio Imagenation Abu Dhabi, has allegedly been paid a hefty sum to never let Djinn see the light of day, even as other studios have sought to purchase the rights.
That's pretty crazy, but we don't know how much of this is legit or not. The handful of new images seen above may be all we get to see of Djinn, so enjoy!
