Tim Burton circling live-action 'Pinocchio'; Robert Downey Jr. to star?
As successful as Tim Burton has been over the course of his career, lately he's been a major disappointment. It seems like he's settled on making adaptations of classic material, such as Alice in Wonderland or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and it's blunted his natural creative instincts. For that reason I'm not particularly excited for his Dark Shadows remake, but think his animated Frankenweenie could be great.
Buton seems perfectly comfortable, though, so much so that he seems all but assured of directing Warner Brothers' planned live-action Pinocchio. And before you ask, at this point Johnny Depp is nowhere to be found. Instead, the studio and Burton are said to be high on getting Robert Downey Jr. to play Gepetto, the old woodcarver who creates the titular marionette. The script has been highly praised, and considering it comes from Brian Fuller(Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me) it should be smart, whimsical, and probably a lot of fun.
This makes three Pinocchio movies currently in development, with Warner Brothers looking to get theirs out of the gate first, for obvious reasons. Shawn Levy(Night at the Museum) is attached to direct The Three Misfortunes of Gepetto, a prequel to the classic story. And last February we learned of Guillermo Del Toro's stop-motion version, but I haven't heard much about that lately.
Both Burton and Depp are pretty busy, and with Warner Brothers keen on getting this done quickly, their participation isn't assured by any means. Burton is set to helm Jane Goldman's adaptation of Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children, while Downey has that whole Iron Man 3 thing coming up.[THR]
