Have a thing for anthology movies expressing deep love for a specific major city in the world? Then you must've been pretty happy with the first two movies in the Cities of Love project: Paris, je t'aime and New York, I Love You. Both have their charms, and like most anthologies some segments work better than others, but they're cool because we get to see dozens of famous names and directors doing things we wouldn't ordinarily see. And in some cases, like with Alexander Payne(The Descendants), it serves as a chance to see the director's work during the long drought between features.
Well if these flicks are your thing, then prepare for one more. Sydney Unplugged isn't officially part of Cities of Love, but this is still pretty cool nonetheless. From producer John Polson comes this series of 12 short films about the Australian city, and the names lined up to direct are pretty impressive. Russell Crowe, Alex Proyas, Liev Schreiber, David Michod(Animal Kingdom), Ivan Sen(Toomelah), Kieran Darcy-Smith(Wish You Were Here), John Curran(The Painted Veil), Rachel Ward(Beautiful Kate), and Ray Lawrence(Jindabyne) are all aboard, with Toni Collette and Anthony LaPaglia making their debuts.
Even though these tend to be a mixed bag, I usually find one or two that speak to me, like the Mira Nair and Bret Ratner(!!!!) segments in New York, I Love You. With this line-up of filmmakers there's a good chance Sydney Unplugged will be much the same. The film will shoot later this year for release some time in 2013. Check out a short teaser for it below...
