My only real experience with the classic yellow spotted Marsupilami character came when CBS started airing a Saturday morning cartoon on him back in the early 90s. I had no idea of it's history, it's Belgian origins at the hands of Andre Franquin back in 1952. The version I was familiar with turned out to be far different than the one which debuted in Franquin's comics, bearing a closer personality resemblance to Bugs Bunny or Woody Woodpecker. He was always being pursued by an oafish human character named Norman.
Marsupilami remains popular over in France, with a TV series still in production to this day, and now also a live-action film which looks like something Brendan Fraser would star in if produced here in the States. Directed and co-starring Alain Chabat, who some will recognize from The Science of Sleep and the most recent Night at the Museum, the film is titled On the Trail of the Marsupilami, and appears to be about some trackers...you guessed it, on the trail of the elusive creature. We actually only get a brief glimpse of Marsupilami in this recently released trailer, and he actually looks pretty good. Instead the focus is on the various mishaps experienced by the lead character played by Jamel Debbouze(Angel-A).
It'll be interesting to see if this film ever makes it's way to our shores. Marsupilami was popular here once, and could be again with the right backing. More likely we may see an American remake or something further down the line, which I'm betting will indeed star Brendan Fraser. Check out the trailer below....[BleedingCool]
