Imelda Staunton, Sam Riley, Lesley Manville, and Miranda Richardson join 'Maleficent'

The British Invasion has hit Fairytale Land. With Disney's Maleficent set to begin filming in just a few months, a serious dose of English starpower has been added to the Sleeping Beauty reimagining.

Sam Riley(Control), Imelda Staunton(Vera Drake), Lesley Manville(Another Year), Miranda Richardson(The Hours), and Kenneth Cranham(Valkyrie) have joined the film, which features Angelina Jolie as the evil fairy who casts the sleeping spell on Princess Aurora. The story will basically be an origin story, showing the events that led up to the story we all know. Sharlto Copley joined last week in the role of Stefan, and it sounds as if Elle Fanning is set for the Aurora role.

Riley will play Diaval, Maleficent's pet raven capable of taking the form of a man. Knotgrass and Flittle, two of the three pixies who take care of Aurora, will be be played by Staunton and Manville. Richardson will be Queen Ulla, a fairy who also happens to be Maleficent's aunt. Cranham will play a human king with plans on conquering the fairy kingdom.

Expect a long post-production process on this one, which explains why director Robert Stromberg is holding it until March 14th 2014. [THR]
