Punch Drunk DVDs

3. Rampart
Woody Harrelson has long been an actor capable of incredible range and special intensity, but with Rampart he gives what could be his finest performance yet as a corrupt LAPD officer who refuses to evolve with the times. Directed by Oren Moverman, who led Harrelson to another great turn in The Messenger, Rampart takes place in the 1990s when the LAPD were embroiled in one scandal or another, focusing on Office Dave "Date Rape" Brown, who sees his personal and professional life spiraling out of control as the world changes around him. Ben Foster(also in The Messenger, Robin
Wright, and Ice Cube co-star.

2. The Grey
It's still crazy to think that Liam Neeson, such a refined actor throughout his career, has become synonymous with early season fight flicks and is Hollywood's most bankable action hero. So it makes sense that many would see Neeson in the harsh, Alaskan wilderness, fighting for his own survival against a pack of wolves and assume this is simply Taken with a layer of snow on it. The Grey is closer to what I would expect a Neeson action film to be. It's a survival thriller with guts and brawn to spare, but there's a philosophical, existential side that makes this more than many would expect.
1. Chronicle
The best movie about super powers didn't come from Marvel or DC, but a little known filmmaker named Josh Trank and starring a bunch of unknowns. Chronicle is a mesmerizing experience, full of rich characters in a world that feels believable. The film follows a handful of average teenagers who are mysteriously given fantastic abilities after making a strange discovery. As their powers begin to grow to incredible levels, they make for a volatile combination with the angst, hormones, and pressures of growing up. Is it simply too much to handle? And if it is, who could put a stop to it?
