Tops at the Box Office: 'Battleship' gets sunk by 'The Avengers' onslaught

1. The Avengers- $55.1M/$457M
Anyone who thought the mighty(at least in appearance) Battleship might be enough to torpedo The Avengers might want to take up another line of work. Marvel's powerhouse of a superhero film continues to dominate in every conceivable way, and I think solidifying its position as the movie to beat for all of 2012. At this point, The Avengers has earned $1.18B worldwide, which places it fourth all-time(!!!), and is now Disney's highest grossing movie ever(!!!).

2. Battleship- $25.4M
The disappointing domestic start for Battleship is sure to have some far reaching effects, even the news is really more of a mixed bag. First of all, Peter Berg suddenly doesn't look like such a hot director anymore, and it makes one wonder if this will impact his ability to make that Friday Night Lights film he's been talking up. The same could be said about star, Taylor Kitsch, who would also feature in that. Kitsch has seen his stock drop like a lead balloon over the last few months, with this marking his second straight dud after Disney's John Carter. Studios are going to stop looking at him as a viable lead for big money projects. Battleship cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $200M, so combine that with the rumored $300M for John Carter and Kitsch suddenly looks like box office poison. I have a feeling we may see Kitsch scrubbed out of the upcoming promotion for Oliver Stone's Savages. The start is tempered by the fact that Battleship has been out on the foreign market for nearly a month, and has earned well over $200M, so it's not a total loss.
3. The Dictator- $17.4M/$24.5M
Well, this was always going to be a tough sell, especially in light of such heavyweight competition. Sacha Baron Cohen's latest failed to attract fans of his shock and awe style, probably because many knew this was a totally scripted affair and thus assumed it to be weaker than Borat or Bruno. Certainly, it's not as abrasive as those movies were, and it showed in the trailers, but you'd also expect that the celebrity supporting cast would make up some of the difference, and that simply never happened.
4. Dark Shadows-  $12.8M/$50.9M
A 57% drop from last week suggests even further that the Depp/Burton combo doesn't have the juice it once did. Time for another Pirates of the Caribbean film, Johnny?
5. What to Expect When You're Expecting- $10.5M
Well, it looked like a less fun version of Valentine's Day, full of bloated, hormonal celebrities in a story that was somehow culled from a self help book found in doctors' waiting rooms. Why would anyone want to watch that? This is exactly the result we should've been expecting.
6. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel- $3.25M/$8.25M
Never underestimate the power of a film that appeals to older audiences. Those folks(which I guess includes me??) have some serious cash to burn and few movies made just for them. The global hit has proven to have considerable legs here in the States as well, jumping up over 21% from last week without gaining a single additional theater. Not bad.
7. The Hunger Games- $3M/$392M
8. Think Like A Man-  $2.7M/$85.9M
9. The Lucky One-  $1.76M/$56.9M
10. The Pirates! Band of Misfits-  $1.45M/$25.4M
