*UPDATE* Clive Owen confirmed for 'Sin City: A Dame to Kill For; Rodriguez talks 'Machete Kills' plot

UPDATE: Empire just updated their original story to say that Owen has not been confirmed yet. Oh well. Chances are he'll be back, but this makes his previous uncertainty seem more legit.

It was inconceivable to think that Robert Rodriguez would move forward on Sin City: A Dame to Kill For without having certain actors already lined up to return. We know that Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, and Rosario Dawson are all set, but one other actor who would be a central figure to the film had been vague about coming back. That guy was Clive Owen, and now Empire confirms that he'll indeed be reprising his role as Dwight McCarthy.

In Frank Miller's graphic novel, Dwight is the main character of the story that will be the centerpiece of Rodriguez's film. Without giving too much away, Dwight again finds himself serving in the role of protector of the Old Town prostitutes, and gets mixed up in a deadly game involving Marv(Mickey Rourke) and an old flame named Ava Lord. Rodriguez was in Cannes and talked up both Sin City and Machete Kills, but wouldn't confirm that the long rumored Angelina Jolie was up for the Ava Lord role...

Rodriguez: “It’s a great part for any actress,” She’s completely diabolical with no mercy. She’s as evil as evil gets.”

He also added that he'd be sticking closer to Frank Miller's source material for the sequel, and that he has a lot of big names he'll be meeting with for roles in the next couple of weeks. I stand by my thought that he'll seek Michelle Williams for the Ava Lord part, but we shall see. Sin City: A Dame to Kill For is slotted for October 4th 2013.

Before that film ever gets rolling, Rodriguez has Machete Kills set to begin at any moment. So far, Rodriguez has a brought back Danny Trejo as the Mexican ex-Federale, with Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez also reprising their parts. Much like the previous effort, he's also convinced an off-kilter group to fill up the surrounding roles, with Mel Gibson, Sofia Vergara, Demian Bichir, and Amber Heard. What we thought we knew about the plot, with Machete being hired by the government to take out a cartel leader from firing a weapon into space, Rodriguez says isn't exactly true...

Rodriguez: “That synopsis we put out is misdirection — it’s all fake. Machete is recruited by the President, that’s true, but there’s no cartel leader and the weapon in space is just one of our early story ideas."

So does that mean this story won't lead into the eagerly awaited(at least by me) Machete Kills in Space?

Rodriguez: "There is still a space element, for sure. We’ve given the character a much bigger playground. It’s going to be like a James Bond movie, with a Bond-style villain.”

Phew! Thank goodness.
