Watch the dreamy new trailer for 'The Great Gatsby', starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan

The first clue that Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of The Great Gatsby would be unlike any other version yet came pretty early on, when the director revealed that he planned to shoot it in 3D. Seriously? A period piece set in the roaring 1920s and mostly featuring a bunch of rich people standing around having a chit-chat? It didn't make any sense, and many sort of dismissed it. However, this is Luhrmann we're talking about here. The same guy who brought us the extravagant, ultra-stylized takes on Moulin Rouge, Romeo & Juliet, and Australia. We should've expected nothing less than something completely out of left field.

Now we're getting a look at Luhrmann's vision of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel, and it's absolutely gorgeous. Loud, brash, and colorful, his take on the glamorous East Egg resembles a dreamworld more than reality. The cast has been the biggest hook by far, with Luhrmann reaching deep into his Rolodex to get Leonardo DiCaprio as the mysterious businessman, Jay Gatsby; Tobey Maguire as the story's narrator Nick Carraway; and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, Gatsby's former flame and the woman he still desires most of all. Joel Edgerton, Elizabeth Debicki, Isla Fisher, Callan McAuliffe, and Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan round out an incredible ensemble.

The Great Gatsby is set to open in 3D on Christmas Day, where it'll go toe-to-toe with Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained...
