Suddenly, things have become very busy for Kevin Costner and Paramount, as they are putting together the pieces of what could be a robust cinematic universe springing from the novels of Tom Clancy. As speculated earlier this month, Costner has officially won the role of CIA Agent William Harper in Paramount's untitled Jack Ryan movie, which has Chris Pine starring as a younger version of the popular character.
On the same day as the Costner rumor surfaced, we also learned of a potential Clancy spinoff, with Christopher McQuarrie set to write and direct an adaptation of Clancy's Without Remorse. The book is set very much in the Jack Ryan world, and early word had it that Costner could possibly crossover if he joined. Now that too has been confirmed, with the Harper character mentoring ex-Navy SEAL John Kelly, who by the end of the novel becomes the CIA operative, Mr. Clark. Tom Hardy is said to be Paramount's favorite for the Kelly role, but no deals are in place.
I'm happy to see Costner taking on major movies again, and between this and Man of Steel, he hasn't been in quite this good a position in a long time. We don't know if we'll have a chance to see Hardy and Pine together on screen yet, but considering how that worked out in This Mean War, I'm kinda hoping not.
The untitled Jack Ryan film will be directed by Kenneth Branagh, and has Keira Knightley set for the female lead. [Deadline]
