The Sunday Drive 9/9/12

3. Bachelorette
The movie for those who thought Bridesmaids needed to be a whole lot meaner, Bachelorette's talented quartet of funny ladies, Kirsten Dunst, Lizzy Caplan, Isla Fisher, and Rebel Wilson are enough to make this a film worth watching at least once.

2. Lawless
While fans of Matt Bondurant's violent and poetic novel may balk at the liberties taken in John Hillcoat's moonshine-soaked adaptation, a dynamic cast, rowdy spirit, and energetic gangster action make Lawless one of the most enjoyable movies of the season.
1. Compliance
Compliance is one of the movies that is so haunting, so unbelievable, so gripping that it's impossible to look away. Directed with cold detachment by Craig Zobel, the reality-based thriller shows the horrific results when those with noble intentions are corrupted by those with baser motives. It's been numero uno on this list for a month, so if you haven't seen it yet what the heck are you waiting for?

DVD Pick of the Week: Safe
Between Safe and and last year's The Mechanic, Jason Statham has quietly been delivering some of the best action flicks of his career. Safe thrusts Statham into familiar territory as an ex-agent turned cage fighting transient who battle Chinese Triads, corrupt cops, and more to save the life of a child genius. Statham is as rock solid as ever, but it's the energetic direction by writer/director Boaz Yakin that sets the film apart.
