A few months ago we were all looking towards Ruben Fleischer's Gangster Squad as a potential late season hit and maybe even an awards contender. Then the Colorado shootings sucker punched the country, and Warner Bros. scrambled to move the film after it was discovered a scene in the film hits a little too close to home. So now it's mired in a crappy January 11th slot, and the film is basically an afterthought. Not discounting the real human tragedy of the event, but I hate how Gangster Squad has been diminished as a consequence.
Seeming to back up that sentiment, the studio has delivered this really awful new poster for the film, which features some badly Photoshopped images of the considerable cast, including a chain smoking Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, and Josh Brolin. Oh, and somebody must have remembered to throw in Emma Stone at the last second. The story follows a specialized LAPD unit designed to keep the influence of east coast mobsters out of Los Angeles.
Here's hoping a new trailer is on the way, because I think people need to be reminded this movie exists. Gangster Squad also stars Anthony Mackie, Michael Pena, Giovanni Ribisi, Nick Nolte, Robert Patrick, Mireille Enos, and Frank Grillo.
