There's a lot of release date juggling going on all of a sudden, along with a pretty high profile cancellation that I'm sure most people will be happy about. At least I know I'm happy about.
Fox has axed their plans for a 3D re-release of Roland Emmerich's Independence Day, which had been set for July 3rd 2013. Why the sudden change of mind? Who knows? But I'm guessing they figured out that the busiest weekend of the summer was a bad time to put out a sixteen year old movie everyone's already seen. Plus, Emmerich's action thriller White House Down comes out the week before, and he probably didn't want to eat into his own box office.
So while Fox has shuffled off one 3D film, they've set up two more. The studio still has the rights to the re-releases of Star Wars: Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and will be putting them out on September 20th and October 4th respectively. With the franchise more exciting than ever right now you can bet these will draw some big audiences.
We learned last month that Paramount was angling for the usual Halloween time frame for Paranormal Activity 5, despite the latest film being the lowest grossing of the franchise yet. The studio has nevertheless set an October 25th 2013 release date for it, so expect to hear word on a director soon.
Lastly, Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt's All You Need is Kill has been bumped up a week to March 7th 2014.
