Paul Schrader has been very up front with the fact that his latest film, The Canyons, was largely financed due to people like yours truly via Kickstarter. In fact, Schrader revels in the crowd-sourced origins of the film right at the very beginning of the newly released trailer, which sticks to the B-movie, retro aesthetic we saw in the earlier teaser.
Lindsay Lohan, looking rode hard and put up wet, stars alongside porn star James Deen in a sex and drug-fueled exploration of obsession and ambition amongst a group of L.A. youngsters. A chance meeting from their pasts turns their lives into upheaval, resulting in paranoia, cruelty, and violence. Looks like the cheeky humor is still firmly in place, and I love that they take a jab at screenwriter Bret Easton Ellis' rather enthusiastic tweeting. My concern is that some of the dialogue sounds really bland, and without the trailer's quirky tone this could be a real snoozer.
The Canyons doesn't have a release date, but one has to assume they'll look to release it on VOD rather than going the traditional route. We'll find out soon enough....
