Nobody knew who Sharlto Copley was before Neill Blomkamp made his incredible debut in the politically charged sci-fi film District 9 a few years ago. While the South African actor has dabbled in much bigger projects, such as The A-Team, Spike Lee's Oldboy remake, and the upcoming Maleficent with Angelina Jolie, he and Blomkamp will probably always be linked.
We've already seen a couple of images of Matt Damon as Max, the battle-hardened hero of the downtrodden in Blomkamp's Elysium, but now we've got the first look at Copley as the insane villain, Kruger. The story is set in 2159 where the oppressed poor are left to fend for themselves on a barren and diseased Earth, while the privileged live high above on a space station known as Elysium. Yeah, it's another film that strikes hard at a real life issue, this time our anti-immigration policies, and based on some of the footage already seen at Comic-Con it's going to be incredible. Jodie Foster plays a government official trying to maintain the divisive status quo, while Diane Kruger is her right-hand woman.
Elysium arrives on August 9th 2013. [Empire]
