Sam Worthington hits the waves in the new trailer for 'Drift'

We've seen plenty of attempts recently trying to build a new niche market out of surfing dramas, with the results mostly being a mixed bag. For every Blue Crush or Soul Surfer that does well, there's a Chasing Mavericks that just shows up and crashes into the reef. Probably the greatest success has been found on the documentary front, as the sport lends itself perfectly to that approach. We're talking man taking on the volatility of Mother Nature, and the sort of people who are willing to embrace that way of life are always worth following. Perhaps that's why so many surfing features are based on real people, like the upcoming action/drama, Drift.

Starring a shaggy-haired Sam Worthington alongside Xavier Samuel(The Twilight Saga: Eclipse), the Australian film takes place in the 70s and centers on two brothers who kick start the surf out of their backyards, only to fall in with some bad folks as they try to expand their business. It's unclear whether it's trying to be Point Break or The Endless Summer, but the tone is all over the place. The cinematography is beautiful, par for the course for most surf movies, co-directed by Morgan O'Neill(Solo) and Ben Nott, the latter having shot the gorgeous post-apocalyptic thriller, Tomorrow When the War Began.

Drift is slated to open in Australia and the U.S. early next year....
