Danny Boyle hopes to shoot 'Trainspotting' sequel in 2016
Fans have been wanting a sequel to Danny Boyle's Trainspotting ever since it became such a cult hit back in 1996. That desire only increased when author Irvine Welsh published the sequel, Porno, back in 2002, leading to a decade's worth of questions about when it would be adapted. While at SXSW for his new crime thriller, Trance, Boyle spoke to ThePlaylist and sounds as if he's finally ready to make the sequel a reality.
Boyle revealed that his longtime collaborator John Hodge is working on a script for Trainspotting 2 or whatever it will be titled, and that he thinks the original cast would be open to return...
Boyle: "This has been a long time coming. There's always been this long term plan for 'Trainspotting 2,' if John can produce a decent enough script, I don't think there will be any barriers to Ewan or any of the cast coming back. I think they'll wanna know that the parts are good so they don't feel like they are letting anyone down."
It also sounds as if Boyle has a definite plan as to when it could shoot...
Boyle: "The ideal time would be Porno in 2016, because it was 1996 when Trainspotting came out. 20 years, it’s like wow, where did that go.... It's very loosely based on 'Porno.' There's a couple of things that are based on the book, but obviously we'd have to have Irvine on board."
Kind of makes me wonder if Boyle will just make it a trilogy and adapt Skagboys someday. Meanwhile, Boyle also has a couple of period pieces in the works, although he doesn't really go into them too deeply...
Boyle: "We're working on two period pieces at the moment, but they won't be like, 'Downton Abbey' period movies. They're like... they're interesting. They've arisen very naturally. I never thought I'd do a period piece. It's weird the way it happens. Maybe because we're running out of genres."
"Period piece" could mean anything, not necessarily Victorian-era stuff. Heck, Hot Tub Time Machine is a period piece when you think about it. But since Boyle is expressing some surprise that he's taking on the genre, my guess is that it will be something Victorian or classical in approach. We'll see. Whatever the case, is a Trainspotting sequel something you're interested in seeing?
