'Evil Dead' remake to be a trilogy; 'Evil Dead 4' is actually 'Army of Darkness 2'

A double feature of Sam Raimi horror news coming out of SXSW, where far too many of my friends have now seen and muddied up my expectations of the Evil Dead remake. Some seem to love it, while others considerably less so. But those who love it are absolutely raving. However it turns out, confidence in it is pretty high, which is why director Fede Alvarez told the crowd of horror buffs that scripting on a sequel is already underway.  They're not wasting any time, are they? If he's making the announcement, then Alvarez must be involved.

But wait, there's more. THR caught up with Bruce Campbell, and here's their quote on what he had to say....

During the late-night Q&A session, Alvarez revealed that he and co-writer Rodo Sayagues have already begun work on the script for Evil Dead 2, with Campbell later adding that the team envisions the films existing as another standalone trilogy.

See that word "standalone" in there? It's important, because there's been a lot of talk this week about Raimi planning an Evil Dead 4, which would be a sequel to his original trilogy. While he deflated the rumor soon after, the thought of parallel Evil Dead series' running at the same time seemed confusing.

Raimi's producing partner, Rob Tapert, spoke on Evil Dead 4 and cleared up some of the confusion by stating that it's actually Army of Darkness 2. Here's the quote captured by Coming Soon...

Tapert: "That would be 'Army of Darkness 2'. Everybody calls it 'Evil Dead 4' but 'Army of Darkness' wasn't called 'Evil Dead' anywhere except by the fans."

I don't recall it being Evil Dead III, either, but I could be wrong. Someone who is a bigger fan of them can clue me in. What I do know is that the three movies are referred to as the Evil Dead Trilogy, which kind of makes it an Evil Dead movie....right?

That's an awful of Evil Dead stuff going on at one time. It's kind of exciting, actually, and I may need to revisit them before too long. Sam Raimi's going to be plenty busy. He'd never have time for an Oz the Great and Powerful sequel.
