Gorgeous English-language trailer for 'Space Pirate Captain Harlock'
A couple of months ago we were treated to a teaser trailer for Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Toei Animation's CG adaptation of Leiji Matsumoto's cherished manga series. Although only about 45 seconds in length, it was enough to show off the impressive visuals and epic space battles, captured in a style reminisicent of the gorgeous Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Now a fuller, English-language trailer has arrived packing more action and a better sense of the story.
Written by Harutoshi Fukai (Mobile Suit Gundam UC) and directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed), the film follows the titular Captain, who grows weary of an inept government not taking care of its citizens. Deciding to take matters into his own hands, he becomes a space pirate defending humanity against oppression. This is Toei's most expensive production yet, rumored to be around $30M, and frankly it looks like the money was well spent.
Space Pirate Captain Harlock opens in Japan this September, and hopefully will find a way onto our shores soon after.
