More on Joss Whedon and Bryan Singer's Quicksilver plans; Saoirse Ronan talks Scarlet Witch rumors

Bryan Singer's sudden decision to cast Evan Peters as Quicksilver in X-men: Days of Future Past has led to the expected amount of frenzied speculation along with a healthy dose of confusion. Quicksilver, a super fast mutant who has served as both an X-man and Avenger, is one of a special few characters both Marvel and 20th Century Fox are able to use. The same goes for his sister, Scarlet Witch, who is also a mutant and a key fixture on the Avengers team. The deal struck between the studios is simple. Marvel can use them but not mention mutants or that Magneto is their father. Fox can use them without mentioning "Earth's Mightiest Heroes".  When Joss Whedon revealed his plans to use them both in The Avengers 2, fans were ecstatic. But Singer did not get the same reaction with his recent announcement, because it seemed to come out of nowhere.

According to Hitfix, it does sound as if Singer's decision to use Quicksilver is a spur-of-the-moment thing, and that his appearance may only be for a single scene, while Whedon has larger plans that extend beyond the 'Avengers' sequel....

"The thing is, Bryan Singer has designed a sequence that he feels only works with Quicksilver, and Joss Whedon feels that there is a pressing reason for Quicksilver to show up in "The Avengers 2,"
and so what we're going to see is a legally-negotiated stand-off in
which we'll get two totally different versions of one character."

Their sources also say that the relationship between the two studios is not at all amicable, and that if one could "get the other to back off", they would. There are other popular characters that can be considered both X-men and Avengers, especially now as the two teams are merged in the comic book pages, so don't be surprised if this becomes a major issue down the road. The story suggests that Marvel may see this as a blatant slight against them, especially in light of all the problems the studios had over the whole Daredevil rights situation.

Considering the terms of the arrangement, Whedon will have to come up with a new explanation for Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch's powers, but that shouldn't be too much of an issue. It'll be Singer who gets to define the character on screen first as X-men: Days of Future Past arrives a full year ahead of The Avengers 2.

Speaking of Scarlet Witch, Hanna and Atonement star Saoirse Ronan has been rumored for the role over the last couple of weeks. Or at the very least, she's who Marvel and Joss Whedon are using as their model for how the character could appear in the 'Avengers' follow-up. Ronan was asked by The Mary Sue whether she would be up for it, and she sounds more than willing to join the superhero line-up....

Ronan: "I have heard about it and yes, I would. Yeah, of course I would. I love Joss and I love those films, and I love his handle on them and how he portrayed these kinds of superheroes. I think it’s very different from what anyone else has done. So yeah, I’d love to be in it.”

Personally, I think she'd be perfect. What do you think?
