Nic Mathieu takes over 'Spectral'; Robert Schwentke directs 'The Finest Hours'; Tom Hardy eyed for 'Rocket Man'

* Now that Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg have decided to set sail for Pirates of the Caribbean 5, that leaves Legendary Pictures' sci-fi film Spectral without a director. Commercials director Nic Mathieu has been chosen to take over the job, helming what has been described as a "supernatural Black Hawk Down". There are no other details on Ian Fried's script, although some are saying it involves a special ops called in to take down supernatural creatures. Mathieu was hired earlier this year to direct a live-action Robotech film, and is attached to direct an adaptation of Ted Chiang's award-winning short, Story of  Your Life. [Variety]

* R.I.P.D. and Red director Robert Schwentke is in talks to direct The Finest Hours, based on a true story chronicled in Casey Sherman and Michael J. Touglas's novel. Set in 1952 New England during a brutal nor'easter, the Coast Guard attempts a daring rescue after two oil tankers collided off the coast of Cape Cod.  Disney is backing this one, with Paul Tamasy and Eric Johnson adapting the script.

* Wait, what? The massively-built, intimidating Tom Hardy to play Elton John? Nah, no way. But that may be the case, as HitFix reports that director Michael Gracey wants Bane to headline Rocket Man, his "radically different" biopic on the musician's life. The film is said to take an unconventional approach complete with choreographed sequences set to John's most popular songs, so maybe making an unexpected choice like Hardy for the role fits into the offbeat tone. No offers have been made yet, and considering Hardy's schedule it may be a long shot for him to agree, anyway.
